Amsterdam derives its name from the river Amstel and the dam that stands in it.  The city started from the right bank of the river Amstel and expanded from there.  Amsterdam, which is the capital of the Netherlands, used to be a small fishing village that flourished and grew into an important trading port and cultural center.  It is also the country’s largest city and houses most of its historical houses.  It boasts of a warren of canals and bridges, buildings that are great examples of modern architecture and creativity, museums that hold works of some of the world’s most renowned artists, its redlight district and so much more.  To put it simply, Amsterdam offers you a package filled with insights into its culture, history and love for a great time.

Cruise the canals

With the five canals surrounding the old city center, this would be the first and logical choice of activity.  A canal cruise will give you great views of the medieval mansions that line the streets – these were once homes of merchants who struck it rich during the city’s Golden Age.  Some of these houses hark back to the early 1400s.  If you want to look at a bit of the city at your own pace, you can pedal your way into the canal using a rented canal bike

Go Museum Hopping

Amsterdam has a number of interesting museums, some artistic, some kitschy while some bordering on the weird and downright bizarre.  But they all do exert a certain magnetic pull so it’s best to go and see at least a number of them.  First on the list is the Rijksmuseum and Van Gogh Museum.  The Rijksmuseum houses important works of the Dutch masters, such as The Night Watch byRembrandt.  Meanwhile, Van Gogh Museum has hundreds of the famous artist’s paintings and drawings.  Pore over Vincent Van Gogh’s self portraits or wonder at the vivid yellows of Sunflowers. Anne Frank’s House is the place where the now-famous Jewish girl and her family hid in a bid to survive the ravages of World War II.  This is where she wrote her diary – the diary that has since then inspired so many of us. Other museums to go to are Madame Tussaud’s, Amsterdam Historical Museum, the Diamond Museum, The Rembrandt House and the NEMO (which is a modern science center).  Would you believe there is even a cat museum (Katten Kabinet), a museum on sex art and history (SexMuseum) and a museum on that controversial “medicinal plant” (The hash, Marihuana and Hemp Museum)?  Now, how’s that for variety?

Go on a shopping spree

Buy flowers at Bloemenmarket (Singel), shop for a bargain at the Waterloolpein Flea Market or go for upscale fashion at the boutiques on Museumplein and Voldelpark.

Go on a Food Trip

Try the rijsttafel (which is a cornucopia of some 15 to 30 different dishes) or go on a romantic dinner cruise along the canal. Drink to your heart’s content by visiting the Former Heineken Brewery.  (And while we’re discussing drinks, there is also a museum that is dedicated to Vodka in the city).

Other options include going to the beach at Zandvoort, exploring the city’s windmills, parks and botanical gardens and so much when.

When planning a trip to Amsterdam, it is best to plan your vacation by choosing any of the tour packages offered.  These provide you with all you need to have a great time in Amsterdam.  These packages usually come complete with hotel stays, tours to key attractions and other important details.
