Dubai Holiday

Are you considering a Dubai holiday? Good idea. Because Dubai is a place like no other in terms of man made wonders. To trigger your curiosity, let me share a few of the less known facts about Dubai. Probably the first word that you associate Dubai with is oil. However, less than 6% of the emirates revenue have as source oil and natural gas. Main money makers are tourism, real estate and financial services. The wise rulers realized that oil will not last forever and therefore advanced towards transforming Dubai into a unique touristic destination and a business and financial center for the region. Let’s see now in greater detail why a holiday in Dubai can add positively to your life experiences.

To note, although it has the aura of pure luxury, you can definitely have cheap holidays to Dubai.

Palm Islands

These are impressive artificially created islands, holding a major commercial and residential infrastructure. This was a way for Dubai to extend the precious coast land. The islands are the Palm Jumeirah, the Palm Jebel Alia and the Palm Deira.

Burj Dubai, Burj-al-Arab, Skyscrappers

In a place where not long ago there was nothing, you can find now (i) Burj Dubai, the tallest building in the world to be, when construction finished, (ii) Burj-al-Arab, the most expensive hotel in the world and one of the visual symbols of the city, (iii) as well as an impressive number of skyscrapers. Overall, the architecture may lack the cultural heritage appeal of European cities such as Barcelona or Paris. However, I believe it is an amazing display of what will and money can create in short period of time. So this is not so much about history and culture, but about modernity and daring projects.

Other places worth visiting

Among the places you don’t want to miss in your holiday to Dubai are: (i) Wild Wadi – an outdoor water park with a wave pool, water slides and artificial surfing machines, (ii) Traditional Souks – these are markets where you can have a very different shopping experience vs. the malls, (iii) Dubai Museum – contains archeological objects and it takes you through an informative historical journey, (iv) the Jumeirah Mosque.

Shopping

Dubai is often mentioned as a famous shopping destination. There are a number of big malls, among which Mall of the Emirates, the biggest shopping mall outside North America. This mall hosts also one of Dubai’s main attractions, i.e. the artificial sky slope, where you can rent equipment and find yourself skiing in a place where the average annual temperature is 860F (300C)  . Other shopping centers include Deira City Centre, BurJuman Centre and All Mulla Centre. You will get very good prices for jewelry and watches all year long (eg. I bought a luxury watch one third cheaper than in a store outside Dubai). If you are looking for good prices for all goods, then plan your Dubai holiday during the shopping festival, usually taking place mid Jan – mid Feb.

Accomodation, Transportation, Places to go out

You can rest assured that you will find accommodation for every budget, i.e. from affordable through the pure luxury of Burj-al-Arab, where the cheapest double room is around 1,000 USD per night. But you can also find cheap hotels in Dubai.

Your best bet to get around is to use a metered taxi, such as Dubai Transport (208 0808). As far as going out is concerned, you have plenty of choice. You can for example enjoy seafood at the refined Aquara in Dubai Marina, go to the Al Khayal Arabic restaurant at the Jumeirah Beach Hotel or enjoy the familiar American burger at Applebee’s.

In terms of bars, you could go to Buddha Bar for a romantic escape, to Rock Bottom Café for a funny karaoke night or to Chi or Cavalli Club if you look for a posh night club.
