You already know that vegetables (and herbs) are good for you and should form a sizable bulk of your diet. But do you know that we can also benefit from vegetables and herbs found in the sea? One of these vegetables of the sea is kelp. It is a kind of seaweed called Laminar, which is brown in color and is packed with essential vitamins and minerals. Kelp has high amounts of iron, potassium, magnesium, calcium and iodine. This sea vegetable also contains bromine, boron, protein, sodium salts, alginates, alginic acid, essential fatty acids, nitrogen, selenium, zinc, laminarin, vitamin C and B-vitamins. Really, kelp has one of the highest levels of minerals from any one source. With all this rich mineral content, it helps to ensure the body’s normal metabolism by regulating the pituitary and thyroid glands.
Kelp (and kelp supplements) are actually more popular with women, since it gives women what they need when they have their period. However, men should also try taking kelp supplements because it is helpful for the prostate gland.
A Healthy Thyroid. One main use for kelp is that it effectively treats thyroid malfunction, particularly goiter. Iodine is essential in ensuring healthy thyroid functions. Kelp is particularly rich in iodine and for years, doctors have recommended patients to take in dried kelp as a solution. Now, iodine can be manufactured. But there are some who have allergic reactions to it. They can instead take kelp, since this does not produce allergic reactions as does manufactured iodine. Other thyroid related benefits include reduced edema, reduced swelling (for enlarged testes, lymph nodes and thyroid). A malfunctioning thyroid is also one cause of weight problems and obesity. When the thyroid is well-regulated, you will have a lot of help in keeping the weight down. Also, a functioning thyroid leads to better metabolism – so that means you burn the fat more quickly and turn it into energy. Kelp is even believed to reduce fat deposits! How about that? Yes, a natural thyroid supplement can do wonders for your conditions. You can find here http://naturalthyroidsupplement.net more high quality info on this topic.
An appetite suppressant supplement might also be of interest to you.
A Thoroughly Cleansed System. This gift from the sea promotes easy discharge of wastes from the body. You know what that means. Kelp is rich in algin which works to stimulate the kidney, absorb the toxins in our digestive system and improve our digestion. The algin neutralizes the toxins and the waste. Even if you are exposed to or are taking heavy metals, drugs, chemicals and other toxins, these are bound by the algin so that these poisons are not absorbed by the body. Kelp also works as a mild laxative.
A balanced and healthy system. With kelp’s help, you can have a stronger immune system and have all body systems (including respiration and digestion) good and ready to go. Kelp also lowers your cholesterol levels by slowing down the absorption of bile acid.
Reduced rheumatic pain. Uric acid build-up in the joints cause rheumatic pain. The tissues and joints become inflamed and can be very painful. Kelp extracts eliminate this by flushing the uric acid out of our bodies.
Great skin. Kelp does not only do wonders inside the body, it also works its magic on the skin. It thoroughly moisturizes the skin so that you enjoy healthy and attractively glowing skin. The same goes for your nails and hair.
Kelp is even believed to prevent malignant cells and fibrocystic breasts. It multiplies the power of the T-cells to fight the malignancy. If you have a cough and an irritated throat, kelp is also beneficial as it soothes the respiratory tract. One other use is in the treatment of problems involving the uterus, prostate, kidney and bladder.
Kelp (since it grows in the sea) has a distinctively salty taste. Some use dried kelp in place of salt. So, you can choose to take kelp either by sprinkling it into your soup or by taking it as a supplement by way of capsules and tablets. It is recommended that kelp be taken at mealtimes.
Now, those who have heart problems and hyperthyroidism should avoid kelp. The same goes to women who are nursing and pregnant. Of course, the common adage about asking your doctor applies in this case. You should always ask the professionals before you try any supplement.
With kelp, the rule is moderation. Avoid taking too much of this since it can have negative side effects such as elevated blood pressure, hyperthyroidism, acne and induced abortion (for those who are pregnant).

Nice hub..but usually kelp is mainly taken for its naturally high iodine content, which will help the functioning of the thyroid gland. Iodine is important for the formation of thyroid hormones, which regulate the body's energy production, promote growth and development, and help burn excess fat.
@angela l.
Yes.
Kelp is essentially a natural multivitamin, it has no pharmacologically active ingredients and therefore should not interact with any medications.
You can use alittle three times a week. It won't interact with any meds. Use it like pepper or take one
capsule a day.
