Hawaii is the 50th state of the United States of America and is composed of several volcanic islands. So there are plenty of places to explore. There are some major islands that you can look into when planning a vacation in Hawaii. Let’s take a quick look at the main ones, shall we?
Big Island
The island of Hawaii itself is where you can find Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii. When in the Big Island, hie off to see the volcanoes at Hawaii Volcanoes National Par, where you will find Mauna Loa, the world’s largest and most active volcano. You can actually see lava flowing out of the craters! Now, if it’s the beach you’re after, Big island has some black sand beaches (thanks to volcanic activity) like Punala’u Beach and Kehena Beach. There is even a green sand beach (at South Point)! Other attractions include the majestic Akaka Falls (and the smaller Kahuna Falls), Pu’uhonua o Honaunau National Park (where you can get a glimpse of Hawaiaan culture and heritage) and the coffee plantations found in the highlands. Big Island is also dotted with botanical gardens that grow a wide array of tropical plants and flowers (visit Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden. Nani Mau Gardens or the World Botanical Gardens). You can also try to have a swim with the dolphins (although this is seasonal).
Maui
This is Hawaii’s second largest island and has won the title of “Best Island in the world” several times. Its claims to fame is Haleakala Volcano, world class resorts that line its beaches, as well as the beautiful winding road leading to the village of Hana.
Oahu
Honolulu, the state’s capital is located here and this is home to most of the Hawaii locals. To know more about the culture of the islands, head to the Polynesian Cultural Center (where you can have the opportunity to join in a luau). Oahu has over 30 beaches, which are all veritable playgrounds for those who want to try some watersports. Be sure to visit any one of these beaches: Kailua Beach, Kahana Bay beach, Ala Moana Beach, Sunset Beach, Lanikai Beach and the famous Waikiki Beach. Other places to visit include the Bishop Museum (which holds a huge collection of natural artifacts), Diamond Head State Park, Hale’iwa Historical town (where Baywatch was filmed), Wimea Valley Audobon Center, Lyon Arboretum and so much more.
Kauai
Also dubbed the Garden Island, this is famous for its lush greeneries and the Waimea Canyon. Waimea Canyon is called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific because it is a smaller version of Arizona’s Grand Canyon. Kauai is also home to the Huleia National wildlife Refuge, Opaekaa Falls, Wailua Falls, Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge and the scenic Na Pali Coast. You may have this sense of déjà vu with Na Pali. Well, this is where Jurassic Park was filmed, so it may look familiar to you.
Other islands you should look into is Lanai (which houses the largest pineapple plantation in the world) and Molokai (which is where you would want to head to if you want to get as close to nature as possible.
Whew! This article is too short to outline all the things Hawaii has to offer. Come and see for yourself. You will find a perfect haven for your honeymoon, that’s for sure.
